Fighting for smoke-free buildings

Fighting for smoke-free buildings

Increasingly, across North America, buildings are going smoke-free - not just in common areas as mandated by law, but in individual units, said François Damphousse of the Non-Smokers Rights Association. "Smoking in multi-unit buildings affects the non-user, unless the unit is hermetically sealed," Damphousse said. "Buildings share air ducts and heating."

Interesting article, mostly because banning smoking in the home was always considered the final frontier.
What's next?

City gets grant to cleanup, prevent Cigarette butt litter » Local News » Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Bluefield, WV
The city of Bluefield was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. This money will allow Bluefield to buy cigarette butt receptacles and fund a public awareness campaign, said Melanie Farmer, community relations coordinator.

These receptacles will be placed throughout downtown Bluefield to reduce the cigarette butt litter ending up on the streets and sidewalks.

Imagine a city isn't talking banning smokers.
They want to make it easier for smokers to behave responsibly and dispose of their butts.
It's like a whole new world and no one is (yet) talking of banning it outdoors.
I'm thinking of you Mayor Bloomberg.

Effective Monday, smokers “will have to walk clear out beyond our parking lot to the edge of our property” and step off the property to smoke on the public sidewalk, he said.
The agency provides mental health counseling and drug-related services and treatment for children, families and adults.
Plenty of the agency’s clients smoke, as do a dwindling number of employees, Levine said.
“Traditionally, clients in the mental health system are notorious smokers, and it is often the case that they smoke because it helps to alleviate some of the side effects of the psychiatric medications they are taking,” Levine said. “There are lots of our clients who do smoke out there.”

Posted because it needs reading.
I once again have nothing clever or sarcastic to add.

Anti-smoking hysteria hits halls of higher learning - Columns - The Telegram

Anti-smoking hysteria hits halls of higher learning - Columns - The Telegram

You know anti-smoking hysteria has gone too far when even centres of higher learning don’t have the courage or the integrity to resist jumping on the speeding bandwagon of blanket smoking-bans.

It's not often I read something I am in love with.
This truly is a lovely, well written piece that seems to show not everyone thinks we should strip away the rights of the minority so the majority will be happy.
The best part us very near to the end, don't stop reading it.

Business react to proposed OOB smoking ban | wcsh6.com

A group of high school students drafted the proposed ban, just like the ban in south portland. But unlike south portland, old orchard beach supports a large tourist-based business community, and those businesses are torn over the effect that a beach smoking ban could have.

Interesting.
Mostly because high school students are proposing these bans. When I was in high school all I cared about was going out and having fun.

The first set of these genes determines your inherent risk of getting lung cancer. The second set has to do with DNA repair mechanisms. Some cancer patients have genes that are faulty and do not sufficiently repair the damage done to the DNA of the cells in their lungs.
The third set of cancer susceptibility genes codes for factors that make you acquire the smoking habit and your addiction potential.

I honestly didn't hate this article.
Was a decent read for a change, instead of something I immediately wanted to trash.

OK TO SMOKE: Plan to ban smoking rejected in Killingworth - The Middletown Press : Serving Middletown, CT

According to Iino, other towns that have implemented the “no smoking” ban have said that the residents of the town informs the smoker that the area they are smoking in is a “non smoking” area. Dudek shook his head repeatedly saying that adults smoking in the parks and at the fields are parents and grandparents.

“Is this going to be any different than them smoking in their homes, in front of their kids?” Dudek said. “What, are we going to police homes pretty soon too?”

How far is too far?
The slope is way too slippery now, small bans are what larger bans are built upon.

Gabler was distressed with the commission's solution to the smoking issue.

"This whole thing backfired on me," he said. "Now more people will smoke, with the butt cans out there."

I don't think he wanted to discuss smoking so much as fix his beach.
Too bad he was unhappy with it.

Back in 2004, Laguna Woods made it illegal to smoke in enclosed and unenclosed public areas.
Then in 2006, Laguna Woods made it illegal to smoke in shared carports, and entryways in multifamily residential buildings.
Then earlier this year, Laguna Woods made it illegal to smoke on ALL patios (open and enclosed) and balconies of PRIVATE residences.
Although Laguna Woods’ residents could still smoke on their enclosed patio, if all the windows and doors are closed.

Sometimes I just post stuff because it needs to be read.

“Ban all forms of tobacco - smokeless and smoking both" | Scoop News

The young, the old, the simple, the sophisticated, the modern and the old fashioned are all under its influence. The proposed ban bodes well for us. Nothing short of an outright prohibition of these products will be acceptable as the voices coming from every corner of the country are loud and clear.
From reading this gem I'm still more than a little unclear as to what about history exactly these people seem to have forgotten.
I think that the U.S. tried a little experiment in oh around 1920 and it stretched for 13 years.
With that great example behind it you would have thought people would have learned something from it.

The health risks of secondhand smoke have been a major motivation for smoking bans in workplaces and indoor public places, including restaurants, bars and night clubs, as well as some open public spaces. Overwhelming scientific evidence concludes that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
So let us strengthen our resolve and make it clear that we need a ban on all tobacco smokeless and smoking!! (CNS)

But apparently I'm wrong in thinking that people remember or learn anything from history.

Video: Subway Workers Enjoy An Illegal Smoke Break: Gothamist

The MTA is conducting an investigation into two transit workers caught on camera smoking cigarettes in the Christopher Street 1 Train station early Sunday morning, around 5 a.m. The place was probably deserted at that time—except for one whistleblowing customer who videotaped their graveyard-shift break, while they gaze warily at the camera trying to keep their eyes open. Now they're probably going to face severe disciplinary action, and as much as we object to secondhand smoke, we can't help but feel a little sad and sorry for these guys, who probably just wanted a little respite during a long overnight shift.

Posted this one mostly for the comments.I haven't laughed this hard in a good long time.People this pissed off does my heart good.

Business buffer shot down as South Portland enacts smoking ban

Business buffer shot down as South Portland enacts smoking ban

Smoking already was banned on state parks and beaches, as well as within 20 feet of municipal building entryways in South Portland and on athletic fields within 30 minutes of use.
The new ordinance carries a fine of $100 for the first public use of smoking or chewing tobacco, $250 for the second offence and $500 for each subsequent violation.
However, one passage reads, "Nothing in this ordinance shall prevent the enforcement agent from obtaining voluntary compliance by way of warning, notice or education."

You know what never mind.
I was all set to be sarcastic as usual but I just don't have it in me.
People came out and spoke up and their concerns were swept aside like so much garbage.
It's disheartening.

Cigarette law rolling down wrong road

Cigarette law rolling down wrong road

Parenting is a matter of very personal choices and values, and a city council doesn't have the constitutional prerogative to interfere in the private relationship between parents and children. The province and the federal government do have the right to pass legislation with regards to child welfare or physical abuse. But until and unless those higher orders of government decide that smoking in the presence of child constitutes a physical assault, I just don't see the logic in local municipal bans on smoking in cars full of kids.

I must have a concussion or something,I almost completely agree with this.

SAHA to ban smoking in public housing - San Antonio Express-News

SAHA to ban smoking in public housing - San Antonio Express-News

To the list of places where smokers no longer will be able to light up — government buildings, parks, restaurants and bars — public housing residents in San Antonio soon will add one more: their own homes.

I always knew this was the goal.
It's always easier to impose such policy on people with less income.
If it's illegal to smoke everywhere but tobacco is still a legal product to use, then what is the point?
Why not just ban it completely?
Oh wait ,sorry I forgot about taxes.

Internet Addiction Supposedly on Par with Cigarettes and Drug Addiction | Death and Taxes

Ever felt it? That annoying tick when you realize that you’ve left your smartphone at home and won’t be able to access the Internet for some time? The world quickly starts to feels like it is coming to an end and that all hope is lost?
Apparently this is the same way smokers feel once they start to kick the habit.

Oh I can see where this is going.
Another place for the people who know all that is good for us to focus their time and energy.
I'll never know exactly how I made it to middle age since I discount every piece of advise doled out by these people.

James Reilly against total smoking ban in cars

James Reilly against total smoking ban in cars -

He said he favoured introducing legislation, as early as possible next year, to ban smoking in cars when children are present.
The minister said the State had a duty of care to minors and he wanted to start a public debate on the issue.
However, he is not proposing a total ban, as suggested in some newspaper reports today.

Well he's a bloody Saint then isn't he?
With all his concern and caring the world's problems will just go away.

It's not snuff, it's not snout … it's Snus | Society | The Guardian

But it does have its downsides. "I find it very addictive, just as much as cigarettes," says Jon Hedelien, who gets through three boxes a day. And while it won't make your clothes stink, it does have a major antisocial drawback. As Rosengren points out: "I wouldn't want to snog anyone when I was using Snus: it makes your breath pretty strong."

That's right.
Always end any tobacco related story good or bad on the down note.
After all it's the big bad.

Tim Dare: Smoking bans and human rights - Opinion - NZ Herald News

Tim Dare: Smoking bans and human rights - Opinion - NZ Herald News

Obvious limitations on smoking are justified in psychiatric hospitals as they are elsewhere, and Davies and Lawn's points about the normalisation of smoking are well made. But psychiatric patients are an extremely vulnerable group, at least some of who have immediate and pressing health needs, and those health needs must be our primary concern. That concern does not appear to warrant a complete smoking ban in psychiatric hospitals.

Good gravy.
I feel like I'm going to pass out.Someone is making sense and doesn't want to rip smoking away from vulnerable people.
Satan must be ice skating right now.

Reilly says Government could ban all smoking in cars

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2011/0727/1224301449234.html
A Department of Health spokeswoman said officials were examining two scenarios here. One involved a ban on smoking where children under 16 were present. The other involved a blanket ban on smoking in private cars if it was deemed that a limited prohibition involving children was unworkable.

This could make Ireland the first country to impose such a ban.

Why does this seem reasonable to any sane human being?
If you own and buy and pay for your own fucking vehicle then why should the government be able to tell you what you can and can't do in it?
Wonder how this will turn out with ASH backing it.

Should smoking in public places be banned? - Local News - News - Gazette Live

http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/2011/07/26/should-smoking-in-public-places-be-banned-84229-29120686/2/

It has also been suggested that a potential town-wide smoking ban would impact on the hospitality industry - with restaurants, bars, and clubs already struggling after being forced to ban smoking in 2007.
One argument in favour of a ban in public places, however, is the effect that the image of smoking has on children.

Oh well we can forget the hospitality industry since there are so many other jobs to go around .
Always save the children, because they must never see or come into contact with a smoker.

http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpps/health/study-nicotine-based-drugs-could-help-control-obesity-dpgonc-20110726-ch_14304048

A new study suggests Nicotine-based drugs may be useful in controlling obesity and other metabolic disorders in addition to helping people stop smoking, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Ahh nothing like science finding a solution for a problem they helped to create.Another great success story.

The drug test that's as simple as the Breathalyzer

http://theweek.com/article/index/217614/the-drug-test-thats-as-simple-as-the-breathalyzer

What kinds of drugs does it detect?
The technology was originally developed to detect the byproduct of a smoker's nicotine, but researchers have gone beyond that. They claim the device can detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methadone (the heroin substitute used to treat addicts). The developer, a U.K. company called Intelligent Fingerprinting, also says that the device might soon be able to detect ecstasy and amphetamines.

Oh happy days.
How amazing and wonderful that this technology exists.
No more nasty privacy issues now.

Australians smoking less, doing more drugs

Drug use was up, with 14.7 per cent of Australians aged 14 and over having taken something in the past 12 months - a jump from 13.4 per cent in 2007.

Cheers for a successful campaign all around then.
The statistics speak for themselves.

Court asked to stop MMDA campaign vs smoking in public

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/29955/court-asked-to-stop-mmda-campaign-vs-smoking-in-public
Under RA 9211, smoking is prohibited in public places defined as “enclosed or confined areas of all hospitals, medical clinics, schools, public transportation terminals and offices, and buildings such as private and public offices, recreational places, shopping malls, movie houses, hotels, restaurants and the like.”
De la Paz said that the law does not mention roads and sidewalks as public places where smoking is prohibited.

I wonder how this will work out for them.
I don't know much about Manila but this bears watching.

Communities 'need more' to save local pubs, says AM

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-14275055

Figures released by the Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign, a coalition of groups that want the smoking ban to be amended, show that Wales has suffered a similar rate of decline in pub numbers to England since both countries banned smoking in pubs in 2007.
Inner city pubs, in areas traditionally seen as having high levels of smoking have suffered the most, the report suggested.

But so many "charities" point to their own "unbiased" *snork* studies that say the smoking bans have improved business.

Vaccine against heroin works — at least in rats

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/a-vaccine-against-heroin-works--at-least-in-rats/2011/07/25/gIQAm4PeZI_story.html

“There is a market for a nicotine vaccine, but there’s no market for this stuff,” said Janda, 54, who has worked in the field for 25 years. “Most cocaine and heroin addicts aren’t CEOs and insurance companies don’t cover them. But there’s clearly a need for this. The billions of dollars spent on wasted lives, theft, destruction, AIDS — it’s hard to measure.”

Amazing how that works or doesn't.
If there's no insurance there's no incentive to treat someone.
