Is smoking ban in cars taking the wrong turn? - The Irish Times - Tue, Aug 02, 2011

Is smoking ban in cars taking the wrong turn? - The Irish Times - Tue, Aug 02, 2011

Smoking in cars has a safety dimension, which is an additional reason for a ban, but how would it be policed? Fiscal incentives may be more effective, for example fitting all cars with a smoke detection device and non-smoking cars could be given a higher trade-in value subsidised by government.
We need to do our research before introducing more tobacco regulation as we have a lot already and people are obeying the law. Any additional legislation might be seen as provocative and could undo the good work already in relation to smoking.

Has Nudge, lie & legislate been effective?

I hate linking to this kind of crap.
Every charity has a different smoking rate listed,it's almost comical how some claim rates have gone up while the WHO claims rates have gone down.

I really hope they don't use tax stamps to try and measure the data.

Fighting for smoke-free buildings

Fighting for smoke-free buildings

Increasingly, across North America, buildings are going smoke-free - not just in common areas as mandated by law, but in individual units, said François Damphousse of the Non-Smokers Rights Association. "Smoking in multi-unit buildings affects the non-user, unless the unit is hermetically sealed," Damphousse said. "Buildings share air ducts and heating."

Interesting article, mostly because banning smoking in the home was always considered the final frontier.
What's next?

City gets grant to cleanup, prevent Cigarette butt litter » Local News » Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Bluefield, WV
The city of Bluefield was recently awarded a $1,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. This money will allow Bluefield to buy cigarette butt receptacles and fund a public awareness campaign, said Melanie Farmer, community relations coordinator.

These receptacles will be placed throughout downtown Bluefield to reduce the cigarette butt litter ending up on the streets and sidewalks.

Imagine a city isn't talking banning smokers.
They want to make it easier for smokers to behave responsibly and dispose of their butts.
It's like a whole new world and no one is (yet) talking of banning it outdoors.
I'm thinking of you Mayor Bloomberg.

Effective Monday, smokers “will have to walk clear out beyond our parking lot to the edge of our property” and step off the property to smoke on the public sidewalk, he said.
The agency provides mental health counseling and drug-related services and treatment for children, families and adults.
Plenty of the agency’s clients smoke, as do a dwindling number of employees, Levine said.
“Traditionally, clients in the mental health system are notorious smokers, and it is often the case that they smoke because it helps to alleviate some of the side effects of the psychiatric medications they are taking,” Levine said. “There are lots of our clients who do smoke out there.”

Posted because it needs reading.
I once again have nothing clever or sarcastic to add.

Anti-smoking hysteria hits halls of higher learning - Columns - The Telegram

Anti-smoking hysteria hits halls of higher learning - Columns - The Telegram

You know anti-smoking hysteria has gone too far when even centres of higher learning don’t have the courage or the integrity to resist jumping on the speeding bandwagon of blanket smoking-bans.

It's not often I read something I am in love with.
This truly is a lovely, well written piece that seems to show not everyone thinks we should strip away the rights of the minority so the majority will be happy.
The best part us very near to the end, don't stop reading it.

A group of high school students drafted the proposed ban, just like the ban in south portland. But unlike south portland, old orchard beach supports a large tourist-based business community, and those businesses are torn over the effect that a beach smoking ban could have.

Interesting.
Mostly because high school students are proposing these bans. When I was in high school all I cared about was going out and having fun.

The first set of these genes determines your inherent risk of getting lung cancer. The second set has to do with DNA repair mechanisms. Some cancer patients have genes that are faulty and do not sufficiently repair the damage done to the DNA of the cells in their lungs.
The third set of cancer susceptibility genes codes for factors that make you acquire the smoking habit and your addiction potential.

I honestly didn't hate this article.
Was a decent read for a change, instead of something I immediately wanted to trash.
